Harmony Headlands Ambassadors Needed

Harmony Headlands is a new State Parks hiking trail opened to the public in partnership with the Cayucos Land Conservancy. It is located on the west side of Highway 1, near the town of Harmony. Harmony Headlands is a consistently popular destination for locals as well as visitors. It is staffed with volunteers called Ambassadors every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. More Ambassadors are needed. Since Ambassadors not only welcome and share information with visitors, but also document the heavy usage of the park, we may be helping to keep it open.

There are 3 requirements to becoming an Ambassador:

1. Submit an application.

2. Attend a training scheduled for Saturday, October 10 at 9:15 AM at the Museum of Natural History in Morro Bay, followed by a guided walk at Harmony Headlands.

3. Volunteer for one 4-hour shift per month.

If this appeals to you please contact Steven Slezak (995-1353) or State Parks Ranger Rob Colligan or Mary Bettencourt (805-235-4543) by October 5.

State Parks Seeking Docent Trainees

The San Luis Obispo Coast District of California State Parks is seeking persons interested in becoming a Park Docent. Docents and other volunteers help State Parks in a variety of ways, including operating visitor and information desks, leading walks, conducting school field trips, patrolling trails, designing and installing exhibits, gardening, and more. New docent training begins on Saturday, October 10 at the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History. Sign-in begins at 9:15 AM with refreshments available. the training is scheduled from 9:30am - 2:00pm, with lunch break at 12:00 noon. Orientation for new volunteers at Harmony Headlands will begin concurrently at the Museum with docent training, then breaking out for specialized information about Harmony, continuing until mid-afternoon.

Docent training will continue at Montana de Oro State Park on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 9:30am - 12:00 noon. The final week of training will take place at Pismo Nature Center on Saturday, October 24, also from 9:30am - 12:00 noon. Prospective docents are encouraged to attend all three training sessions. Harmony Ambassadors need attend only the session on October 10.

Those interested in becoming docents at the Museum and nearby State Parks should contact Carolyn Frank, Docent Training Coordinator, at 528-8578, or Rouvaishyana, Museum Manager. Those wishing to become Harmony Ambassadors (volunteers) should contact Mary Bettencourt via or Steven Slezak.

Come join us in our ongoing adventure of making our State Parks come alive for visitors!
