A Bird's Eye View by Mike Stiles

I like sparrows—a lot—but it wasn't always so. Like many beginning birders, I found them difficult and dull, shrugging them off as just another LBJ (Little Brown Job). I clearly remember the day, though, that all turned around, when I "worked" on a very cooperative sparrow that I had never seen before. It afforded me long looks, and turned out to be a Clay-colored Sparrow, a rare bird in this county, and a very handsome sparrow I might add.  Now I enjoy their subtle beauty, and look forward to a good sparrow challenge in the field. Coastland Contemplations by Michele Oksen

For the most part, wind on our Slo Coast is simply a cleansing ocean breeze. You can enjoy wind that makes music in the pines. You can appreciate, more often than not, that wind here blows in good quality air rather than blasts off your hat. Sure sometimes it challenges your good hair day, gives you a reason to bring along a jacket, or makes it difficult to keep your high profile vehicle in between the lines of your lane on the road, but rarely does it generate fear that our homes will sail off to Oz. Elfin Forest by Jean Wheeler

Stewarding the Land:  We've saved a piece of land. Now what do we do with it?  Join Robert Hill, Executive Director of The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County, for a walk and talk about acquiring land and then repairing broken landscapes that have suffered years of abuse.  He'll point out several conservation properties that can be seen from the Elfin Forest. Almost all were planned for development in the past.  We'll learn about methods and costs of restoring land once it has been bought and gain a greater appreciation of the work of conservation organizations and individuals who work to save land for future generations. Exploring the Coast by Ruth Ann Angus

I nearly creamed two wild turkeys who were trotting up the road from the State Park. What's the matter with them? Don't they know this is the season for serving them with cranberry sauce and stuffing? I'm not sure wild birds would be as tasty as the domestic variety. These birds look rather lean and lank. I have to wonder how they have been doing living life in town. Read More

Marine Sanctuaries by Carol Georgi

As environmental groups and the public work together, we learn how important our coastal waters are to our economy. "From restaurants and hotels, to aquariums and kayak operators, the success of many businesses, millions of dollars in sales and thousands of jobs, directly depend on thriving national marine sanctuaries." Sweet Springs Reflections by Holly Sletteland

No doubt many of you have seen various letters to the editor and articles in local papers regarding the plans that Morro Coast Audubon has put together for the new addition to Sweet Springs, on the corner of 4th Street and Ramona. Although it appears that most people are supportive of the proposed access improvements and restoration of the areas dominated by veldt grass, some have taken serious exception to the proposal to remove up to 120 eucalyptus trees on the property over 10 years.  I'd like to take this opportunity to correct some of the misconceptions about what we are proposing to do, as well as to address some of the concerns that have been expressed.
