Rituals

by Richard C. Hannibal

They have been here since the beginning, watching and waiting for the right moment to give the gift of wisdom to the struggling human race. They came from nowhere and from everywhere. It is not possible to give a location of origin. They just are.

They

Over time they have descended in the forms of Jesus, Buddha, and Abraham - and other Enlightened Ones - to give light on the Path. Because their frequency vibrations are unlike those of earth forms, they have sometimes appeared as a mist or overhead clouds. Yet their interests are common with those of man, for they are also on the Path. They know the journey must be completed together, for there can be no stragglers.

They had given the ancient Egyptians power and wisdom. They witnessed mankind turn these abstract thoughts into cold stone monuments with no meaning other than to those whose egos built them. They watched as man attempted to gain insights from the pointed stone structures, only to have the meaning lost in their form.

Watching and Waiting

They are patient, for they understand the laws of evolution, which apply equally to their plane. And so, through millennia, the weak and blind are led by the fragile and nearsighted, who in turn are led by stronger beings of clearer vision. Those of greater wisdom lead, in turn, onward towards eternity.

Even with their increased wisdom and insight, the Observers have trouble understanding the many rituals of mankind. Since the beginning, mankind has reacted strangely to his environment. The sun and moon lost their meaning early in time and became, themselves, the objects of worship and ritual. Jesus, Buddha, Abraham, and the Enlightened Ones are not remembered for what they taught, but became the things worshipped. Still, the Observers patiently wait as mankind continues slowly down the Path.

The misty clouds hang over the earth year after year, watching. The land, scarred but forgiving, continues to nourish mankind as wars are won and lost. The Observers know the critical point is once again near, for they have been here before. Evolution has taken mankind to the place where the Path divides once again. One way leads to continued growth and wisdom; the other leads to the end of the era. The choice is not predestined. There can be no freedom without choice and the choice is man's.

The Moment of Decision

The Observers watch. Some things are not clear to them, as their insight and understanding is distorted and clouded by dimensional differences, just as man's is. They watch as women give birth, only to have abundance withheld from them due to greed, hate, and politics. They watch as ego impacts ego and suffering goes unnoticed by the callous beings who rule the lands.

The misty clouds hang over the cities and farm lands as television stations broadcast the peace negotiations of the super powers. It is a time when loving, positive energy is being pumped into the environment through those on earth who 'know.'

The sun is bright and warm. Lovers walk hand in hand on beaches, talking of future dreams. Flags in a hundred nations blow gently in the breeze. Negotiations continue.

Gulls hang effortlessly in the wind over the warm sand. Waves caress the earth in massage-like motion. Children play on the playgrounds of a thousand schools. Negotiations continue.

The elderly stand, humiliated, in long lines waiting for their handouts of cheese. Nuclear submarines glide silently along ocean floors. The Observers watch; negotiations continue.

Desperate men and women remain stifled in ghettoes and resort to the vilest of actions. Churches close on Christmas Eve. The world is split along partisan lines and imaginary boundaries. Negotiations continue.

A line of motor homes crawls up the coast like a trail of ants. Boats are launched to pull water skiers around a thousand lakes. The Observers watch; negotiations continue.

Hopeful eyes watch the evening news as information trickles out that the negotiators are making progress. Eyes watch as women of glamour and men of apparent distinction dispense information in clinical tones. "Our side is ahead, be true to your school." The Observers watch; negotiations continue.

"THIS NEWS CAST HAS BEEN INTERRUPTED BY AN EMERGENCY BROADCAST. YOU ARE ALL INSTRUCTED TO TUNE TO 98 ON YOUR RADIO DIAL FOR EMERGENCY INFORMATION -- THIS IS NOT A TEST."

Millions of fingers reach for radio dials.

Negotiations continue. Suffering continues. Egos prevail.

The Culmination

The misty clouds quickly evaporate in the white light. The flags of a hundred nations disintegrate in sudden, violent wind and intense heat. Gulls fall to the beach, their feathers aflame. The waves boil. Children vanish in the blink of an eye. The long line waiting for cheese is no more. The ghettoes are cleansed by a fiery wind. Desperate men and women are no more. Churches are in flames, fed by last week's offerings. Motor homes are smoldering skeletons on the cliffs of Big Sur. Silence.

Ten Million Years of Silence – It Begins Again

Finally, out of the stillness, a dead ocean feels a flicker in its depths as a single cell creature comes to life. Another flicker, then another! Electrical energy flashes and clouds form. Rain begins to fall and a bud pushes up through the blackened soil. A gentle healing breeze circles the earth as the Observers, hovering overhead in the misty clouds, smile and wait . . .
