July, 2010                Morro Musings Moving On

Ah, yes, vanity. Why everyone knows that "Vanity, thy name is woman." And it makes sense — to most men — when you look up that word in any dictionary providing more than two definitions/illustrations. Put vain before most feminine nouns, and you make that subject or object almost worthless. Or, describe a female's failure to achieve a notable feat, and you wind up with futile. You want to go with how a fashionista perceives her self? Then go with conceit and pompous. Well, what's a man to do or think when even a woman's magazine carries the title Vanity Fair? Shame on women; shame!

June, 2010               And After Kissy . . . Mowgli!

A couple of months ago, I shared with you the story of Kissy, my alpha diva Husky, who went over the Rainbow Bridge in January 2009. This is the story of what happened next . .

May, 2010                My Election Selections

Since I am retiring after 20 years in Morro Bay city government, people have been asking me which candidates I support in the primary election on June 8. I care very much about the future of our city and the leaders who will take us there, so here are my opinions on the candidates, pro and con, based on my personal experience and knowledge about them.

April, 2010                Fun With Fundraising

The idea for Morro Bay's annual Fundraiser Follies originated in 2007, when the City, due to budget constraints, could no longer provide free support services for local events. Variety show fundraisers have been successful for years in San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande and Cambria, and since I'd participated in the Women's Shelter show at the Madonna Inn for several years, I was familiar with the format and thought it would work on a smaller scale in Morro Bay.

March, 2010             Changes and Challenges

As I announced at a recent council meeting, I do not intend to run for re-election as mayor of Morro Bay. I have served three terms in a row. It is a very challenging job, especially since the primary adds eight months of campaigning to the second year of each term. It is also a very rewarding job. For anyone who might be considering running, here's a job description to aid in your decision:

February, 2012         Remembering Kissy

Those of you who love animals understand how they seem to magically enter your life at the right time. My first dog arrived when I moved into my first house. My second decided she liked living inside with me better than living outside at my neighbor's. My third dog, Sabrina, was a Siberian Husky given to my by my sister.

January, 2012          Karaoke - or How to Be a Singing Star in Your Own Hometown

Does everyone, as we sing in the shower or along with the car radio, imagine themselves a singing star . . . in a rock band, a Broadway show, an opera, a recording studio, on American Idol? I confess that I do!

December, 2009       The Gift of Giving

When we are children, the holidays are all about receiving gifts . . . the list, the visit to Santa, the fascination of the pretty packages, and the excitement of opening them.  Somewhere along the line, not too long after we find out Santa's true identity, the focus changes from receiving to giving, and the gifts we give bring us equal or greater pleasure than those we receive.

November, 2009       Morro Musings

This month's column features some long-time residents of Morro Bay sharing their memories of growing up here, leaving for awhile, coming back home, and of the changes they have seen.

October, 2009          Discovering Morro Bay 3

This is my second column about how people chose to move to Morro Bay. It's interesting that many of the women are single and chose to come here for the quality of life, even though there aren't a whole lot of single men around. Guess we're either happy in our independence or like the challenge!

September, 2009      Discovering Morro Bay 2

As I mentioned last month, asking people how they discovered Morro Bay brought some fascinating responses. This month's column features some couples who moved here and how they happened to do so.

August, 2009            Discovering Morro Bay 1

I love hearing the stories about how people who live here discovered Morro Bay.  For many, it was an almost spiritual attraction, as it was with me.  I lived in Santa Monica and worked in the film industry for 20 years, but realizing it is a youth-oriented field, I went back to UCLA to get my Legal Assistant certificate.
