A Bird's Eye View by Mike Stiles
Do birds matter? This question, posed in a recent
edition of Audubon magazine inspired this month's column. A
quick internet search with that question returned many other articles
and blogs that show that birds do matter to many, many people. It's a
shame we even have to ask the question, but allow me to answer too.

Coastland Contemplations by Michele Oksen
Even if they were chocolate covered, termites in a
tree stump don't sound like a tasty treat to you or me, but to a black
bear they're worth clawing for. As easily as a two-fisted toddler might
tear into a birthday cake, a bear's giant claws scratch off hunks of

Elfin Forest by Jean Wheeler
Jerry Kirkhart and Mike Baird will cover
the use of all types of digital cameras and iPhones for landscape,
macro, and telephoto photography. They will give tips on solving
the problems of light contrast in an oak grove, getting a good close-up
of the forest's native flowers and catching birds and butterflies in
flight. Bring your tripod, macro lens, and cell phone, if you
have them. Preferred are digital single lens reflex (DSLR)
cameras. If your point-and-shoot camera has a macro setting, please
review that function before coming, as they are all different. Also,
bring binoculars to identify birds in the Elfin Forest. Bring
water and wear layers in case it is windy. Read More
Marine Sanctuaries by Carol Georgi &
Karl Kempton
Hanalei Bay, Hawaii (HI) and San Luis Bay, California
(CA) are popular tourist destinations thousands of miles apart across
the Pacific Ocean from each other. The communities bordering these bays
could become "sister communities," working together to improve and
preserve the health and beauty of their bays by developing coastal
health plans and forming marine sanctuaries. Read More
Whale Watch Adventures by Rouvaishyana
May is a month of transition for whale
migration and marine life in general. Strong onshore winds produce
coastal upwelling, which begins to form coastal fog and phytoplankton
blooms. Phytoplankton feeds zooplankton, which feeds small fishes,
which in turn provide food for marine birds and marine mammals
including whales and dolphins. Read More
