Double Vision
Everyone was worried when I moved to Malawi, Africa for my two-year Peace Corps service. "It's AFRICA!" said a friend of mine. "You better watch out." Let me be more specific than she was – to her, Africa meant AIDS. And this article will in no way try to disprove that impression. That impression is correct. There is a reason that the average life expectancy in Malawi, Africa is 37. One in seven Malawians is HIV positive. Read More

A First for MB/CSD, or a Fourth? Find Out on January 10
For three years, the city of Morro Bay and the Cayucos Sanitary District have been seeking to replace their jointly-owned 50-year-old wastewater treatment plant fronting on Estero Bay with a new plant. Now Morro Bay and Cayucos are trying again.
And now, if they go ahead with their plan they stand to be defeated for a fourth time. They are partners in the Joint Powers Agreement partnership.
It all comes to a head at a California Coastal Commission meeting, where the Commission staff has marshaled even more powerful arguments against the latest plant proposal from last summer. This will appear for the fourth time. MB/CSD lost three times before. The meeting is scheduled for January 10 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Pismo Beach, 780 Bello Street. The meeting is last on the Commission's day-long agenda, with no set beginning or ending starting times for this issue. Read More
Needed Actions by California State Lands Commission
For public safety, all California State Lands Commission (CSLC) geophysical survey permits (GSP) need to be immediately suspended. Human safety needs to be the priority. CSLC does not consider potential physical harm people could receive if decibles (dB) are over 145 dB when recreating in the nearshore ocean. We wonder, has anyone recreating in the ocean during the surveys received physical harm or died? Read More
New Monthly Feature - Atascadero Writers Group
Five of SLO Coast Journal's regular columnists happen to be current members of Atascadero Writers Group. They are Richard Hannibal, John Bullaro, George Zidbeck, Rose Marie Zurkan, and Jane Elsdon. Founder, editor, and publisher of the Journal, Judy Sullivan, recently made the group an offer they couldn't refuse. She invited members to submit their work on a monthly basis. Delighted by the prospect, in the midst of holidays and all, they scurried about and sent the following pieces. Read More

As we are all aware, a lot of perfectly reliable, capable, and talented people are out of work. We want to use this page, this month and in the future, to introduce you some of them in hopes that you might have, or know of, a job that could be a match for them. This first introduction is personal for me - Elizabeth Henderson is my daughter. Elizabeth's quest for employment is, obviously, what gave me the idea to start this feature. Read More

Shutterbugs - Featuring Marlin Harms
Photography defines me as much as anything does. From the amount of time spent with a camera, to computer time, planning the next shoot, how friends and acquaintances know me—it's what I do. It wasn't always that way. After all, until recently I had a full-time job that wasn't photography.
