Spring Sings

by Jane Elsdon

It does. It does. It absolutely does. Spring sings. It sings songs of whole orchards of popcorn trees appearing. It sings songs of bird trills, mating calls, songs of daffodils, magnolias, poppies, sweet peas, and wild mustard. It sings green hills into being. It sings nursling leaves into emergence on formerly bare boughs. Those songs often come in rhyme. And I have to admit it. As unpopular as rhyme is in some circles, I love it. But only when it is not tortured rhyme. So long as it comes naturally, for me it comes complete with music. I enjoy reading, hearing, and singing it. So for me, spring is a rhyming time. And it truly does sing.

My great grandson, Jacob, gave me the finest of compliments recently. I was helping him with a homework assignment. It was to write eight sentences containing two spelling words in each one. Each sentence was to have at least six words. He looked at the list.

"How about people and write," he asked.

"That's fine," I replied. "Do you have a sentence in mind?"

"Yeah. Some people write a lot of books."

"Do you have anyone in mind?"

"Yeah. Dr. Seuss." He paused for a moment, then looked up with a mischievous grin, "And YOU!" he exclaimed.

"Dr. Seuss! How did I get so lucky? I've never been in better company. I LOVE him!"

Of course Jacob knew that all along. We've read a lot of Dr. Seuss together in our day.Come to think of it, he was born in spring.  And I'm still wondering, how DID I get so lucky? Yep, spring sings.

April

Coming of Spring

Do seedlings cower
in guilt and dismay
that through dirt and debris
they must break their way?

Behold green leaves unfurling,
Oh, see the petals uncurling
and rejoice!

Do hills shrink in shame
that once they lay brown,
in deep sleep before they donned
spring’s fresh green crown?

Behold grass springing up green.
Oh, see its emerald sheen
and rejoice!

Spring is letting go of guilt and fear,
uniting with that which brought us here;
linking hearts in at-one-ment and Love
our song soars as One, below, above.
We rejoice!

Spring

Pink and lavender blossoms
and fruit blossoms
white as light
drift on the breeze

Great Mother births creation
in a blizzard of fragrance.
This morning all the abundance
of heaven
brightens earth
with its purseful of promises.

We are all blooming.
We are all, in each moment
being recreated.
We are everything and everywhere.

We are, each one of us
cells in the body of God
bursting into expression.
