NEWS RELEASE - Morro Bay’s Fire Chief

March 18, 2013          

The City of Morro Bay is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Knuckles as the Fire Chief for the City of Morro Bay.  Mr. Knuckles has been employed by the City of Morro Bay since May 1999 where he began work as a Fire Caption.  In his 14 years with the City of Morro Bay, Mr. Knuckles has been involved with a number of projects and programs in the City including Acting Fire Chief on numerous occasions, Department Training Officer, Mutual Aid Strike Team Leader, NIMS/SEMS Training Coordinator for the City of Morro Bay and many others.  Mr. Knuckles, recently completed serving a 3-month term of Interim Fire Chief immediately following the retirement of former Chief Mike Pond.      

Steve has over 30 years of diverse fire operational and supervisory experience with both the City of Morro Bay and the City of Atascadero.  Mr. Knuckles areas of expertise are diverse with extensive work in training, supervision and management.    

City Manager Andrea Lueker has worked with Mr. Knuckles in a variety of capacities since he began with the City in 1999 and she is extremely pleased to have him heading up the Fire Department.  She states “I have found Steve's abilities, work ethic, commitment to community, extensive qualifications and experience as well as his strong desire to succeed make him the right choice as Morro Bay's next Fire Chief”   Mr. Knuckles will be formally sworn in as the Fire Chief during the April 23, 2013 City Council meeting, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Morro Bay Veteran’s Memorial Hall, 209 Surf Street in Morro Bay.

Join us for a very special event in honor of Earth Day on Saturday, April 13th from 9am-12pm at the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve in Los Osos.  Help us pot up native plant seedlings for planting out this coming winter as.  Nurture plants that were planted in the ground  last winter by removing weeds and watering.  Make sure they get off to a good start so they can provide habitat for insects, lizards, birds, rabbits and other animals in the future.  No experience is needed – just enthusiasm!  We’ll provide plenty of tools, tips, & munchies.  You’ll also have a chance to win a free tee, hat or tote!  Meet at the corner of Ramona Ave and 4th Street.  More info at 239-3928, mcas@morrocoastaudubon.org or Morro Coast Audubon.
