"The notion of a free press, of an institution that monitors those in power and those who wish to be in power, that ferrets out truth from lies, that draws public attention to the pressing issues of our times, is a cornerstone of a liberal democratic theory."

Life - Experience it all!

Break into a strain of "Figaro! Figaro! Figaro" and listeners will immediately recognize a refrain from The Barber of Seville.  This opera features familiar music and comedic antics, beloved by many and even parodied in at least five different cartoons including Bugs Bunny in the Rabbit of Seville, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Droopy Dog, and the dog Spike from the Tom & Jerry cartoons. Slo Coast Journal Exclusive: Coastal Commission Rejects WWTP

The California Coastal Commission staff has rejected the proposed Morro Bay-Cayucos wastewater treatment plant in a landmark report obtained exclusively by the Slo Coast Journal. Its recommended rejection of the project is expected to be supported by the commission at a March 11 meeting in Santa Cruz, sending the plan back to the Morro Bay City Council and Cayucos Sanitary District board for complete overhaul before the multi-million dollar sewage plant can be built after more than five years of delays. Morro Bay-Cayucos to Hire Lobbyist

The city of Morro Bay and Cayucos Sanitary District plan to hire a lobbyist to asses their chances of winning approval of the California Coastal Commission for their proposed new wastewater treatment plant, which the Commission staff has rejected in a detailed 23-page report that some think makes those chances moot and, therefore, hiring a lobbyist a waste of taxpayer money. Seagull Sentinel Backers Exposed

Who did it? Who paid for and produced the Seagull Sentinel, a pro-Bill Yates-for-mayor political flyer fashioned as a would-be newspaper and filled with unproven charges, distorted claims about opponent Betty Winholtz's voting record on the City Council, deceptively-worded arguments, false statements about issues on which she took positions, and personal attacks on her? Sale of Morro Bay Power Plant Stalled

The sale of the Morro Bay Power Plant and its parent company, Dynegy, which could open the way to long-awaited redevelopment or some alternative use of the prized 107-acre plant site on the north shore of the Morro Bay National Estuary, has bogged down in a bidding war that has led to the resignation of Dynegy's top management. Local Film Showing Exposes 'Silent Epidemic'

There is a silent epidemic infesting American's public schools, and a new, widely-lauded documentary will expose it to the public and parents in the coastal and county area with the debut and single showing of Race to Nowhere at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 1, at Laguna Middle School, 11050 Los Osos Valley Road, San Luis Obispo. Black Hill Trail Work Day

Do you love Black Hill overlooking Morro Bay and the panoramic views it holds of the Central Coast?

The second annual trail work day is scheduled on Sunday, March 20, to keep the trails in good condition so everyone can hike up the mountain and take in those spectacular views.

Volunteers are urged to meet at 9 a.m. and lend a hand. They will meet in the Cerro Cabrillo parking lot on South Bay Boulevard just east of Black Hill in Morro Bay State Park. The Cerro Cabrillo summit area will have its trails spruced up as well by the volunteers.

A total of 27 people volunteered last year to repair erosion from rain, thin out brush, and close off some short cuts that show up. "Our trails are in much better shape as a result of the volunteers who work on the trails, and we look for more volunteers to help make it better," said Jamie Irons, one of the founders of the trail maintenance project.

The effort is being organized by the State Parks Trails Committee and assisted by the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers, who also include hikers, trail runners, equestrians and mountain bike groups, in cooperation with the State Parks Department.

There will be coffee and baked goods as well as a raffle and prizes. For further information or to volunteer, contact Irons at 772-9294 or irons@charter.net or Paul at pcr026@gmail.com.
