A Reflection of Me

By Richard Hannibal

One of Morro Bay’s colorful citizens is a man in his 60's who calls himself "Brother Frog." Once you get to know him, you can call him "Bro-Fro." Bro-Fro is an artist who lives aboard a humble little boat on the bay. His shaggy beard and hair are often topped by a unique looking hat. He has an old van and a small, white, fluffy dog that faithfully follows him around town. Bro-Fro hand-paints tee-shirts and sells them at the Rock. I am sure the tourists look at him with interest. Bro-Fro’s old van has a somewhat crude, but interesting hand painted mural on the side.

Bro-Fro and I often pass each other in different directions, me in my police car and he in his van. As we approach one another we both get a big smile and extend our arms out the window and give the peace sign; or we extend our index finger, which he told me stands for "justice." We then continue on in our own little worlds.

Last Saturday, about nine in the morning, I was in a really good mood. I was smiling and waving at folks as I cruised in my police car down the Embarcadero. Life was good and I felt good. As I drove, I saw Bro-Fro standing next to his van in a bay-side parking lot. I slowed, rolled down my window, and yelled out, "Bro-Fro, it’s a great morning." He yelled back with a big smile, "That it is." I couldn’t help noticing that Bro-Fro looked really happy and at peace. I yelled out, "Bro-Fro, you are looking really happy." He smiled and said, "I know, I’m a reflection of you."

The momentum of my police car carried me past Bro-Fro and his words. For the rest of the morning I thought about what he had said. The more I thought, the more meaning those few words had. I thought about a man the day before who was angry; another man who was sad; a woman who was depressed, and a child who was full of hope and energy. Then, I related to how I was feeling at the time of these contacts and sure enough, each one of these folks who came into my life at their particular moment were "a reflection of me."
