A Bird's Eye View by Mike Stiles

A great deal of birding is the simple act of being in nature, your senses tuned to the slightest movement or sound in the trees, trying to discern an identification with very subtle and miniscule clues, sometimes alone but often with other birders, telling stories of birds seen and birds missed and birds we want to see one day, and generally an extremely enjoyable experience.  Read More

Coastland Contemplations by Michele Oksen

Near the Rocky Butte ridge top, on this eastern slope of the Santa Lucia Mountains, there are very few sycamore trees. Unlike lower elevation areas in SLO County where sycamores border the banks — places like San Simeon Creek, Santa Rosa Creek, Sycamore Mineral Springs, and so many others — at higher altitude, these stately trees can be scarce, as can water. Elfin Forest by Jean Wheeler

Jim Royer will lead us on a bird inventory walk in preparation for Sunday's Big Sit!  This international event, hosted by Birdwatcher's Digest, pits participating groups of birders against one another to identify the most species of birds in one day. Our Big Sit! takes place at Bush Lupine Point. Join Jim on Saturday in finding and identifying 60 or more species of birds throughout the Elfin Forest and in the Morro Bay estuary. Regardless of your birding experience, you'll come away knowing more about birds, their calls, habits, and habitats.  Read More

These two protected sanctuaries and the ocean area between them share many marine species that swim into the seismic testing ocean area to feed. Marine mammals especially feed from the year-round persistent upwelling between Point Conception and Point Sal. This upwelling flows through the submerged five-fingered Arguello Canyon and the Rodriguez Seamount north of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. Read More
