Morro Bay Book Discussion Groups, Friends of the Library, and Other Library Program News for February

Morro Bay, You Rock!  This is what you'll hear our hip students at Del Mar Elementary saying these days and it's a fabulous way to say thank you to all our customers who shopped at the February Morro Bay Friends' of the Library Book Sale!  Thanks to you, the Friends broke all previous fundraising records and raised $4,516.00 for your Morro Bay Library. Keep those book donations coming in and gigantic thanks to our outstanding Friends book sale volunteers!

Help Wanted!  The Friends are searching for a Web Master.  The website is currently being remodeled to be as user friendly as possible.  We are searching for a volunteer to keep the website updated — web experience not necessary.  We will train you.  Skills needed are a bit of free time, access to a computer, and willingness to learn!  Email Christine.


Here's What's Happening at the Library in March.

Tuesdays

March 27, 5 - 7 p.m. Meet the Author Peter Lovenheim.  His book, In the Neighborhood, is Cuesta College's Book of the Year.  Hear Peter speak at Cuesta in the Cultural and Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo Campus.  This event is free.  Parking permits required for $2.00. 

Cuesta's Book of the Year program is a shared reading experience that seeks to promote literacy, discussion, and learning across the college campus and within the larger community.

Wednesdays

March 7, 10 a.m. –Noon, I Still Dream About You by Fannie Flagg.
Birmingham real estate agent and former Miss Alabama, Maggie Fortenberry learns valuable lessons about the nature of friendship, the challenges of modern life, and the dangers of impossible dreams as she struggles to keep her Realty afloat and bury the heartbreaking secrets of her past.

March 14, 10 a.m. – Noon, In the Neighborhood – the Search for Community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time by Peter Lovenheim
In partnership with Cuesta College's Book of the Year program, we will discuss this author's quirky, heartfelt quest to meet the neighbors – and to rediscover what it means to live as more than strangers next door.

March 21, 10 a.m. – Noon, Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith
A delightful new setting – London — a wonderful new cast of characters and one incredibly clever dog. Corduroy Mansions is the affectionate nickname given to a genteel, crumbling mansion block in London's vibrant Pimlico neighborhood. 

March 21, 12:00 - 12:45 p.m. Wilshire Health & Community Services - Good Neighbor and Senior Peer Counseling Programs in conjunction with Cuesta Book of the Year program.

Come learn about the many wonderful free programs that support individuals and families throughout San Luis Obispo County who are facing challenging circumstances through difficult life transitions. You are can also learn how you can be a part of this program as a volunteer. Refreshments will be provided.

March 28, beginning at 10 a.m.,  4th Wednesdays @ the Movies  A Sunday in the Country  (94 Mins.)  French with English subtitles.

Monsieur Ladmiral, an aging impressionist painter, spends his usual Sunday afternoon visit with his family ruminating over life's small pleasures and inevitable disappointments until his daughter Irene arrives. Irene, a whirlwind of activity for whom life itself is an art, has a magical reviving effect on her father and the world suddenly takes on the beautiful hues and feelings of an Impressionist masterpiece.

Thursdays

March 1, 10 a.m. - 10:40 a.m. - Pre-School Story time (This program also meets at the same time on March 8, 15, 22, 29)
Join us for stories and music. On March 22 join us for stories and songs about making friends and being kind to one another.

March 23, 10 a.m. - Noon, 4th Fridays Mystery Readers Group presents:  Somewhere in Crime - Central Coast Mystery Writers Anthology 2012 Panel Discussion with Special Guest Moderator, Sue McGinty, Editor.

For this very special 4th Fridays Mystery Readers event, you will not only have the opportunity to read and discuss this special collection of short stories, but experience a panel discussion with some of the authors and Editor about their latest Central Coast Mystery Writers Anthology. Don't miss it! Be sure and pick up this special read, available at the Morro Bay Library!

Saturdays

March 24, 10:30 a.m. - Noon, Growing a Community –Find out how the Morro Bay Beach Tractor Families won the Sunset Magazine One Block Party Contest.  This program is in conjunction with Cuesta Book of the Year (In the Neighborhood by Peter Lovenheim).

Join the Beach Tractor Families to learn about their experience through their stories and a slide show presentation. Find out how they made their neighborhood more cohesive, created an intergenerational gathering, changed peoples lives, and incorporated kids teams centered on community. Kids are welcome to join the kids team for a special activity while the adults can stick around for a recipe sharing from the final days food feast! Featured in April 2012 Issue of Sunset Magazine. Break

There is still time to sign up for the Adult Winter Reading Winter Program, "Hot Reads for Cold Nights.”   Read nine books and receive prizes and surprises. The fun goes through April 15.  Stop by the Library to sign up!

The Winter & Spring Series 2012 Booklist, 4th Fridays Mystery Readers  2012 Booklist, and Special Event Series Flyers are available for download at Morro Bay Book Discussion Group or at the Library.
