Local High School Student Wins $500 Scholarship
from Morro Photo Expo

Morro Bay High School senior, Sue-Lyn Dorrough was awarded a $500 scholarship on June 14 by Morro Photo Expo. Sue-Lyn, a Los Osos resident, will use the scholarship to further her studies in photography and graphic design at Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois. Read More

Independent Probes Expose Nuclear Plants Menace

Nuclear plants in the U.S. are getting very old, hard to repair and keep running safely, allowed to put off fixes and upgrades by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and, by all accounts, are acutely dangerous for the millions of Americans who live close to them, two investigations by independent news agencies have documented in landmark studies that send a dire warning throughout the country. Read More

EPA Proposes Lax Power Plant Rules

Power plants like the one in Morro Bay may be able to go on indefinitely using water from bays, estuaries and the ocean to cool their generators—and kill untold billions of fish and larvae in the process—under new regulations of that water use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency despite federal court decisions ordering sharp restrictions. Questions Still Mark Proposed Wastewater Treatment Plant

Morro Bay and Cayucos have a new consultant hired to develop a new wastewater treatment plant plan after the previous one was rejected by the California Coastal Commission earlier this year because it failed to meet local and state requirements. Whether the new plan will win approval is still far from uncertain, but two public workshops on the consultant's work plan indicated a faltering start. Read More
