Morro Bay Book Discussion Groups, Friends of the Library and other Library Program News

Morro Bay Library

The first book sale of 2011 by the Morro Bay Friends of the Library is scheduled for Saturday, February 5, at the Library from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Friends of the Library hold book sales four times a year to raise funds for use by the library to serve residents. They also provide volunteers to support library services and operations, publish a newsletter distributed throughout the community four times a year and build and maintain awareness of library needs and services among residents.

Friends of the Library members can get a head start and may shop exclusively from 9 to 10 a.m. From 1 to 2 p.m., books can be purchased by anyone for $3 a bag. For more information, please email our president at Morro Bay Friends of the Library or call 772-6394.

Wednesday Book Discussion Group

The regular Wednesday book discussion group meetings will start in February with "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles on February 2 at the Library. It tells the story of Gene and Phineas, who share a room at Devon, an exclusive New England prep school and form a complex bond of friendship, which draws out both the best and worst characteristics of each boy and leads ultimately to violence, a confession and a betrayal of trust.

On February 9, the Friends' Share Day, held on the second Wednesday of the month, invites participants to bring their favorite non-reading list books to talk about with others. They also can bring their favorite dishes to share with the group. (Check with the group facilitator to learn what you should bring each month. It rotates based on the last letter of your last name. To find out, visit Morro Bay Book Discussion Group, contact Karen through  email or call 225-3131.)

On February 16, "Case Histories" by Kate Atkinson is the subject of discussion. It centers around private detective Jackson Brodie, a former police officer, ex-husband and weekend dad, who takes on three cases involving past crimes that occurred in and around London.

On February 23, local author Joan Sullivan of Baywood Park is the scheduled guest. She will continue her tour of central coast history through her discussion of the many books she has written.

The Wednesday sessions are from 10 a.m. to noon in the Library's Program Room.

Fourth Fridays Mystery Readers

On February 25, the regular Fourth Fridays Mystery Readers meeting will feature "The Long Fall" by Walter Mosley, also from 10 a.m. to noon. A wide spectrum of mysteries, thrillers, and suspense novels are discussed at these get togethers.

The meetings are held at the group facilitator's home. For more information, you may visit Morro Bay Book Discussion Group or contact  Karen via
email or by calling 225-3131. Participants are encouraged to bring their favorite dishes for sharing with others.

Children's Story Hour

The regular Children's Story Hour is held each Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Program Room.

For more information email our President at Morro Bay Friends of the Library.
