December, 2014        Scapula Location is Key

IAs you begin to read this article mentally check out your shoulders. Are one or both elevated toward your ears? If so, release them. Push the outside tops of the shoulder blades down and back while moving the bottom tips in and towards each other. This movement will facilitate an opening in the chest. Find that opening. This is the best position for the scapula bones (aka shoulder blades). And it makes a difference.

October, 2014           Why Gait is Important to You

In analyzing this component of gait we first look for swaying, arching or compression in the lower back. You know that if someone arches their back a lot when they walk and there’s already compression, then there’s going to be increased pressure. This lordotic type of gait will also exacerbate any existing disk impingement in the lower back.

September, 2014      The Importance of Gait

Walking correctly is essential for preventing and resolving lower back and leg issues. And it can be a difficult thing to implement. Think about how many steps a person in their 40's or 50's has taken in a lifetime. The existing biomechanics are very ingrained. We don't think about walking. We just do it.

August, 2014            Sciatic Solutions - Part 2

A general rule in treating sciatic problems is that each location needs to be resolved independently.  And it can take time.  There is no magic pill or procedure that will remedy these issues.  No doctor can do it for you.  Your active participation is required for a true and lasting resolution.

July, 2014                 Sciatic Solutions - Part 1

Sciatica is a general term used to describe the pain and discomfort caused by an impingement of the sciatic nerve. It is usually felt as pain radiating from the buttocks down the back of the leg. The pain can be sharp, shooting or burning. It can be constant or come in waves or shock-like zingers. Sitting, standing up, walking or sudden movements can worsen the pain.

Anyone who has read my articles knows that I am a big advocate of stretching for preventing and resolving pain and injuries.   Unlike many activities, stretching is available to just about everyone, regardless of their athletic or physical abilities.

May, 2014                Resolving Lower Back Pain

Up to 80 percent of adults will experience back pain at some time in their lives. It is a leading reason for physician office visits, hospitalization and surgery. When asked about common types of pain, respondents to a National Health Interview survey indicated that low back pain was the most common.

March, 2014             The Key to Mobility by Brian Dorfman

Maintaining mobility in the hips is an important part of overall health and wellness that is often overlooked. It is a vital component of lower back care and an intrinsic part of any athletic training program. As I detailed in my previous article, there is a strong correlation between tightness in the hips and lower back tension.

February, 2014         Make the Connection

One of the best-kept secrets in health care today is the strong connection between lower back pain and tightness in the hips. While there is a great deal of discussion and information about causes of and treatment for lower back pain, this dynamic is rarely mentioned. Web pages for the Mayo Clinic, WebMD and the National Institutes for Health, leading authorities on health and medical issues, are all silent on how the hips factor into this common health problem.

January, 2014           Student Athletes and Technology

I've worked with many student athletes in the past few years and it's obvious to me that these young men and women are in a very different situation then we were 10 or 20 years ago.  The student athlete of 2014 is up against hurdles I myself never saw as a young athlete.  Now, the training for many high school athletes is comparable to those doing college level sports.
