Crime Scene

Lock Your Doors!

LOCK YOUR DOORS! Some Morro Bay citizens continue to live in denial. Yes, Morro Bay is relatively crime-free, but bad guys still lurk in the shadows. On 7-21-2011, a residential burglary occurred in the 2600 block of Laurel Avenue. The resident left the house doors unlocked while they were away. When they returned to their peaceful, crime-free little neighborhood, they found their home had been entered. Thieves left with two new flat-screen televisions, multiple firearms, jewelry, and money. The total loss was almost $10,000. We are finding that thieves will readily pass up a locked car or house, preferring the convenience of an unlocked one. A locked car will remain untouched in a cluster of unlocked cars where items are taken. This ain't Fresno or L.A., but it ain't utopia either. LOCK UP!

A Sampling of What the Morro Bay Officers
Have Been Taking Care of For Us

The Morro Bay Police Department has been busy. Among the primary charges for each arrest were—under the influence of methamphetamine, probation violation /possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, disorderly conduct/drunk in public , misdemeanor out of county warrant, creating disturbance, receiving/concealing stolen property, failure to register as a sex registrant, driving with a suspended license, and parole violation.

Most of the incidents involved heated arguments loud enough to alarm neighbors. Officers provided counseling to many folks and facilitated peaceful resolutions in most situations.

Some of the more significant activity for last month is outlined below.

On June 24th, officers responded to the 700 block of Embarcadero to investigate a report of a male subject creating a disturbance. Officers responded and contacted a male subject who was hiding in the public restroom. Further investigation resulted in the officers discovering the subject had stolen mail in his possession. The subject was arrested for possession of stolen property.

In the early morning hours of June 24th, officers responded to Albertson's parking lot where officers located a subject who was reported to be suicidal.  The subject voluntarily came to the police department and mobile crisis was requested.  Subject was not deemed a threat.

In the late evening of June 25th, officers responded to the 400 block of Atascadero Road to check the welfare of a person who was reported by family members to be considering suicide. After getting no response at the door to the residence, officers gained entry and found the female subject breathing but unresponsive with several empty prescription bottles.  Subject was transported to Sierra Vista where she later died.

In the evening of June 26th, officers responded to 2700 Elm Street to investigate a report of domestic violence. Upon arrival, officers saw a vehicle leaving the area that was involved in the altercation. Officers stopped the vehicle and further investigation revealed that the driver was driving under the influence, had a misdemeanor warrant and a suspended driver's license.

In the evening of June 27th, officers responded to a report of a male subject throwing furniture into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Morro Bay Boulevard. Officers contacted a male subject who was upset with his roommate. The male subject arrested for being intoxicated to a point he was unable to care for his safety or others, in addition to having a misdemeanor warrant.

In the early morning hours of June 28th, officers responded to the intersection of Elena and Greenwood after receiving a report of an intoxicated driver being at that location.  Officers located the subject and vehicle.  After further investigation, officers determined that the male subject was driving under the influence and responsible for a non-injury traffic collision.

In the early morning of June 29th, officers responded to the 400 block of Napa to investigate a report of an intoxicated male subject on the front porch of a residence where he did not belong. Officers responded and ended up arresting the male subject for public intoxication.

In the early morning hours of June 30th, with the assistance of SLO County Probation Officers and State Parole Officers, MBPD conducted a probation search at a residence in the 400 block of Java Street.  This was the culmination of more than four weeks of information gathering and investigation.  A female subject at the residence was arrested for probation violations related to drug paraphernalia.  The fire department and building inspector responded due to the deplorable living conditions at the residence.  The house was red tagged by the building inspector.  The property owner is working with the building inspector on cleaning up the residence so that it is habitable.

On July 8th, officers took a report of $2,500 stolen from a backpack that was accidently left at a business in 1700 block of Main. The owner left the backpack at the location with the money in it. When he returned, the backpack was still there, but the money was gone. This case is under investigation.

A residence in the 400 block of Java was "red tagged" by Public Services for Safety Code Violations. The police department conducted a probation search and found the code violations. The house was cleaned, repairs made, and the "red tag" was removed. After the house was once again livable, the police department immediately began receiving calls from neighbors regarding noise complaints and suspicious activity. On July 11th, officers responded to a complaint and after further investigation, arrested a subject for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The police department is in the process of organizing a neighborhood meeting with interested neighbors to discuss the city's public nuisance ordinance.

On July 12th, officers responded to the 300 block of Shasta Avenue to assist Child Protective Services with a reported child abuse at a home. Officers assisted with the investigation and the tenants of that residence are in the process of being evicted.

On July 11th, officers responded to a report of a dog biting a show lamb and a 14-year-old girl at Morro Bay High School. Officers conducted a preliminary investigation, which was forwarded to San Luis Obispo County Animal Services.

In the morning of July 16th officers responded to a report of gunshots fired in the vicinity of the 300 block of Rennel. Officers contacted several neighbors in the area, but could not locate the source of the gunshots.

In the evening of July 17th, officers responded to a report of a person who sustained a dog bite while trying to break up a dogfight. The dog's owner was arrested for public intoxication.

On July 19th, officers responded to a report of a sexual battery that occurred at Del Mar Park. The report indicated a man inappropriately touched an adult female at that location. The case is under investigation.

On July 20th, officers responded to a report of a homeless subject camping along the 300 block of Quintana Road. A recent fire in this area was attributed to homeless campers. The camp was unoccupied and will receive extra patrol.

In the afternoon of July 20th, officers responded to a residence in the 2600 blk. of Laurel Ave. An unlocked house resulted in the theft of electronic equipment and firearms.

Training

Officers attended 96 hours of training related to active shooters. The officers held simunitions training at MBHS to simulate an active shooter situation at one of our schools. This type of reality-based training is state of the art and creates an environment that is as realistic as possible to an actual event. Thanks go out to the school district for allowing the use of the facilities at MBHS.
