Assisting Boater in Harbor

MORRO BAY HARBOR LOGS

FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE, 2009

During the month of June, 2009, in the course of their duties, the Morro Bay Harbor Patrol responded to 99 calls for service, including 12 emergencies.  Patrol personnel engaged in 35 enforcement actions and 45 maintenance actions.  Highlights include:

Wednesday, June 3

·Issued warnings to several motorized but unregistered skiffs.

·Issued citations to four liveaboard vessel owners without proper permits.

Thursday, June 4

·Checked on a report of a sailing vessel leaving the harbor and pumping sewage along the way.  Upon closer inspection it turned out that the vessel was not pumping anything, but was just transiting through a line of foam in a current line.

·Issued two more citations for liveaboards without permits.

Friday, June 5

·Retrieved a derelict and adrift sailing catamaran spotted in the bay.

·Emergency response to a report of a boat on fire approximately five miles outside the harbor.  Arriving in the area, Harbor Patrol and Coast Guard vessels only noted the fishing vessel Heavy Metal steaming inbound with a heavy black smoke coming from her stack.  This was confirmed to be the boat “on fire” and deemed a false alarm.

Saturday, June 6

·Assisted MBPD with an outstanding warrant arrest of a person living aboard a moored vessel off of Tidelands dock.

·Assisted Pacific Wildlife Care release a seabird at sea.

·Received a report of an intoxicated person leaving a waterfront eatery and motoring away in his boat with two kids aboard.  He was located, followed to the launch ramp, and with MBPD and Coast Guard assistance was arrested for BUI.

Monday, June 8

·Emergency response for a report of a person “drowning at the Rock.”  As Harbor Patrol, Coast Guard, and MBFD personnel arrived on scene, it was ascertained that the juvenile victim in question was not drowned, but being assisted by two of his friends and a nearby surfer.  All were OK and, along with their parents, were given a water/beach safety lecture to help prevent such occurrences in the future.

Friday, June 12

·Emergency response to a reported overturned kayak in the bay near the A-2 mooring area.  The hapless boater was OK and assisted to shore.

Sunday, June 14

·Emergency response to a report of a vessel dead-in-the-water near the harbor jetties.  The boat was located and Harbor Patrol stood-by while the Coast Guard towed her back into the harbor.

Wednesday, June 17

·Warned two speeding jet skiers of the operation rules and regulations in Morro Bay.

·Towed two electric rental boats back to the rental dock due to running out of battery power fighting an incoming current and high winds.

Friday, June 19

·Emergency response to a MAYDAY call from a sailboat aground on the sandspit in the surf.  Coast Guard and Harbor Patrol vessels arrived on scene, and a Harbor Patrol rescue watercraft was able to pull the three persons aboard off and to the beach without incident or injury.  They were walked back to the bay side of the spit while Harbor Patrol and Coast Guard vessels, after three attempts, pulled the vessel back through the surf and into the harbor.

·Assisted a jet ski operator with an injured ankle get medical attention for his wave-jumping injury.

Saturday, June 20

·Provided a water/beach safety presentation and demonstration inside the harbor for the WaterFest event taking place for the day at the Rock.

·Towed a small sailing vessel free that had grounded across from the south T-Pier.

Monday, June 22

·Towed three derelict vessels bound for demolition to the launch ramp to meet their maker.  In the course of two days, all were reduced to rubble and carted away.

Tuesday, June 23

·Towed a broken-down, 20-foot sport boat from near Target Rock to the launch ramp.  A throttle problem was the cause.

·After-hours emergency call-out for a report of a vessel taking on water in her slip.  Pumps were put aboard, the leak located and stopped, and a diesel mechanic called in to repair the source of the leak, which was somewhere in the vessel’s exhaust system.

Wednesday, June 24

·Emergency response to a medical aid call on the beach for a stingray sting victim.  The juvenile was released to his mother for follow-up care with a doctor.

·Emergency response for a missing 12-year old girl on the beach, last seen in the dunes behind the beach.  After a short search the mother located her overlooking the otters on the bay.

Saturday, June 27

·Assisted MBPD locate a wanted person reportedly living somewhere in the dunes in and around the beach.  He was located and observed until PD Officers arrived and arrested him.
