Happy New Year Everyone, near and far!

We made it through another one and I am probably not alone when I say this . . . it was a doozy! Some of the events of the last year still boggle my mind. But to be fair, I seem to be much more easily boggled these days. I am really not sure why that is, though it is possibly due to the alarmingly fast onset of advanced age ( I'm 51 years old, criminy!) and deteriorating mental acuity. Or maybe it was just trying to make some sense of all that has happened. (Big mistake!)

So when I paddled out for a surf later that morning, my razor sharp senses and blazing intellect got together and concluded that a new wetsuit would be a really good thing. You see, we like to call it "surfing," but in reality, much of the time it could easily be called "sitting" or else "paddling." We spend most of our time paddling through the surf, paddling to stay in the lineup if there is a lot of current, and sitting, waiting for the waves to arrive - ll in very cold water. So, here on the central coast a good wetsuit can conceivably be more important than your surfboard. You could have the best surfboard in the world, but if it is too cold to paddle out, it will stay in the car.

Skiers and snowboarders obviously love the wintertime with its blizzards and powder conditions. Waterskiers and wakeboarders want the hot calm days of summer on the lake. Surfers - we wait for the season that brings the largest and most consistent surf conditions. Here on the central coast we are now coming into that time of the year - fall, my personal favorite.

One of the great things about writing on the subject of surfing, aside from all the wealth and fame, is that it allows me to share some of the things I find so incredible about the sport.

A friend approached me recently and asked if I would be interested in writing about surfing. In particular, surfing here on the central coast of California. I was somewhat taken aback by the question as I have never written so much as a "letter to the editor" - or anything else for that matter.
