Morro Bay Mayor Irons Set to Run For Re-election

Mayor Jamie Irons has formally announced his candidacy for re-election in 2014. Irons, a 22-year resident of Morro Bay, won his first term in an impressive victory over 3 opponents and is the only Mayor ever in Morro Bay history to be elected in the first election of Morro Bay’s two election system.

Irons cites the major accomplishments he made in his first term as reasons for re-election. “I’ve followed through with my campaign promises of vision, transparency and leadership. I’m proud to report the city received a grant to begin the process of updating our 26 year-old general plan, I’ve opened up the Embarcadero lease negotiations for public input, and I have allocated pavement funds in response to the needs of the community to not only resurfacing streets but also include repair." “The bike path and bridge connecting North Morro Bay to the Embarcadero is progressing, and I’ve led the city through a public process on identifying the new location for the wastewater treatment plant.”

Regarding his work on the wastewater treatment plant, Mayor Irons has even received praise from Coastal Commissioner Mary Shallenberger, who stated the Mayor should be commended for diligently acting on the requirements of her permitting agency.

Focusing on the next two years, Mayor Irons stresses the importance of hiring a City Manager that has a proven background and experience in the critical issues facing Morro Bay.

“Our city water supply is at risk with the drought, and much of our infrastructure hasn’t been updated since we incorporated as a city.” The recent closure of the power plant and future use of the property is also a major issue for Morro Bay. “As a former employee of the power plant, I know the property and power industry very intimately, and as Mayor I will work collaboratively with Dynegy and advocate for Morro Bay’s best interest.”

Irons is also an avid surfer, bicyclist, and craftsman who lives with his wife Monica, a Morro Bay native.
